It’s time to quit smoking! Long has the burden of chronic disease and death plagued users of tobacco products. Globally, more than 6 trillion cigarettes are smoked daily. Smoking and other tobacco use has been directly linked to cardiovascular problems, risk of developing cancer of the bladder, mouth, esophagus and throat, and other chronic ailments.
If you are at-risk of developing a chronic condition, or already have one and are ready to make a change, talk to a wellness coach to help you stop smoking.
How Can a Wellness Coach Make Me Quit Smoking?
Truthfully, a wellness coach can’t make you do anything. The goal is to get you thinking about all of the reasons you want to quit smoking – be healthier, decrease risk of developing chronic disease, live longer – and promote positive behavior changes in you. Your coach will work with you to build an awareness of why you smoke or use tobacco in the first place, help you understand what your triggers are, and fight with you through your barriers that are holding you back from living a healthier lifestyle. You and your coach will work together to create a personalized plan to reach your goals.
I Smoke. What Else Does the Coach Want to Know?
Your coach will want to know what a typical day is like for you, so they can better understand you. Are you working more than 8 hours a day? Do you care for multiple children? Do you have a long commute to get to a job? Are you happy? After your coach gathers enough intel on you, they will help you to develop a plan adapted to your unique situation.
What Methods Will a Wellness Coach Use With Me?
Wellness coaches are capable of using a multitude of techniques. Three of these are:
Motivational interviewing. They are trained to be your personal cheerleader and confidante. When you are doing well, they will tell you so!
Cognitive behavioral therapy. This method will get you thinking about why you perform the behaviors you do.
Rational emotive behavioral therapy. If you are friendly with terms such as “always” and “never,” your wellness coach will help show you ways to replace these terms with more flexible and realistic terminology.
